  6. The display should return to the date and time.
Q: Is the fax unit Year 2000 compatible?

A: Sharp is working to identify and communicate all Year 2000 issues. Please be advised that Sharp’s current facsimile machines indicate only the last two digits (e.g. "00") of the year in which it is operating and will change from "99" to "00" in normal operation and, therefore, do not require special attention because of the turn of the century.

Q: Where can I purchase an instruction manual for my fax unit?

A: Call the Sharp Accessory and Supply Center at 1-800-642-2122.

Q: My fax unit cannot receive an incoming fax when it is connected to an answering machine. How do I correct this?

A:
1) Verify that the hookup is correct.
The phone line of the fax machine should run directly from the RJ11c wall jack to the TEL LINE of the fax machine. The phone line accompanied with the answering machine should be plugged into the TEL SET position of the fax machine.

2) Make sure the reception mode is set to AUTO on the fax unit.

  1. Program the fax unit to recognize your answering machine. To accomplish this, please follow the procedure listed below:
  2. Press the FUNCTION key
  3. Press the number 4 key on the dial pad
  4. Press the # key on the dial pad 9 times until you see TAD CONNECTED in the LCD screen.
  5. Press the number 1 key for YES to allow the fax unit and the answering machine to work together.

3) The next immediate setting of QUIET DETECT TIME will appear in the screen. The setting of 04 should be used.

Q: I am able to send a fax, but unable to receive a fax, how do I correct this?

A: Set the fax machine to AUTO reception. Next, you would want to set the proper settings in your Option Set List. To print a list press the FUNCTION key, the number 2 key, then press the # key until it reads OPTION SET LIST in the LCD screen and press the START key. This will print your list. The following settings should be seen:

  1. Number of Rings 1 to 4 rings (setting #2)
  2. Dial Mode- TONE (setting #8)
  3. TAD Connected- OFF (setting #9) *
  4. Quiet Detect Time- 04 seconds (setting #10) *
  5. Distinctive Ringing- OFF (setting #12) **

Note: If all of the above is satisfactory, refer to #6.

6) Is the machine set to answer manually? (display will read "man")

If so, how many telephone devices are attached to the Phone Line?

Each telephone, answering machine, computer modem or cordless phone has a REN [Ringer Equivalency Number]. This number is normally found on the FCC tag and will appear such as REN = 0.7B. Do not worry about the "B". Most Local phone companies normally provide sufficient ringer power for a REN of 5. What this means is that when the RENs of each device are added together they must be 5 or less. If the numbers are greater than 5 the machine will likely not answer. Example below

Telephone 1 REN = 1.2B

Telephone 2 REN = 0.8B

PC Modem REN = 0.4B

Answering Machine REN = 1.1B

Fax machine REN = 0.9B

Total REN = 4.4

With this number all devices should work properly.

* Settings are only pertinent if unit is hooked with an answering machine

** Distinctive ringing will only be needed if you subscribe to the service through your local telephone company. Otherwise, the setting should be off.

To change any of these settings, follow these steps:

  1. Press FUNCTION key
  2. Press number 4 key on the dial pad
  3. Press the # or * key until the desired setting appears in the screen
  4. Press the appropriate number to get the desired setting.

Q: Where can I take my multifunction machine for service?

A: Call 1-800-BE-SHARP or go to the Customer Service page of the Sharp web site and click on "service questions" to find an authorized service center near you.

Q: Where can I locate UX-10CR imaging film?

A: The UX-10CR has been discontinued. UX-15CR has been substituted in its place. You can purchase UX-15CR film at many office supply retailers or call (800)-642-2122 to place an order by phone.

Q: My unit will not allow me to program any information, why?

A: The first thing you may need to look is the imaging film has not been installed. These units need to have it installed correctly to allow you to program your unit. The next thing may be that the unit may not be plugged in. It will not allow programming if the unit has no power.

Q: When I make a copy or receive a fax there are black spots on the paper?

A: 1) Open the operational cover on your unit where it states PANEL RELEASE

2) Observe the reading glass and the scanner. They are located across the unit towards the front of the machine. It is behind the two rollers on the base. It is possible the glass is cracked or there maybe some packing material on the unit which may cause the dark spots or lines. To clean the scanning glass use a lint-free cloth or a Q-tip and brush lightly across the glass.

Q: Where can I obtain floppy disks in substitute for the CD-ROM I received with my UX-600M or UX-1400?

A: Call 1-800-BE-SHARP and provide your name, address, phone number, serial number and model number of unit and we will ensure the disks be sent to you within 7-10 business days. You may e-mail us at cacfax@sharpsec.com with all necessary information and we will fill your request.

Q: What should I do when I have my unit connected to a PC and I receive an error message on my computer?

A: Here is a list of suggestions:

  1. Verify that the hookup with the PC interface cable is correct and ensure that the cable is hooked from the back of the fax machine to the serial port on the back of your computer. An adaptor or connector to convert a parallel connection to a serial connection is not recommended.
  2. Put the fax unit into the PC mode by pressing the FUNCTION and the "2" key.
  3. Verify the settings in the SHARP group:
  1. go to START and click once
  2. go to PROGRAMS and then click on CONTROL PANEL
  3. go to CONFIGURE in the software; this will tell you what comport is being used
  4. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE COMPORT SETTING BE SET TO COM 1.
  1. If the errors keep occurring you want to check to see if there are any conflicts on your comports. An example would be that the PC interface is connected to COM1 and you may have an internal modem on COM1 or COM3 which do share the same IRQ’s. For explanation or assistance in re-configuring your comports, please contact your PC vendor.
  2. If the configuration has been verified and correct by your PC vendor, then you may want to re-install the Alacrity software to recover any corruptions.
